Effectiveness of low-dose radiation therapy on symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis: A randomised, double-blinded, sham-controlled trial
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases Dec 21, 2018
Mahler EAM, et al. - Researchers evaluated 55 patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA; aged ≥ 50 years) in this randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled clinical trial (RCT) conducted in the Netherlands to assess the impact of low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) on symptoms and radiation therapy in this patient population. Study participants were given LDRT or sham intervention 6 times in 2 weeks. The investigators observed responses in 12 out of 27 patients in the LDRT group vs 12 out of 28 participants in the sham group. No changes in clinical and any of the inflammatory signs were noted, indicating no ample profitable consequences of LDRT. Hence, they recommended the use of LDRT as a therapy for knee OA.
