Effectiveness of Cucumis sativus extract vs glucosamine-chondroitin in the management of moderate osteoarthritis: A randomized controlled trial

Clinical Interventions in Aging Nov 02, 2018

Nash RJ, et al. - In this randomized double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial conducted at three different centers, researchers compared the efficacy of Q-Actin, an aqueous extract of Cucumis sativus (cucumber; CSE) vs glucosamine-chondroitin (GC) in managing moderate knee osteoarthritis (OA) in 122 patients (56 males and 66 females) between 40 and 75 years of age. The intervention ran for 180 days. At baseline (Day 0) and on Days 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180, pain, stiffness, and physical function of knee OA were assessed in the GC group, which got the normally prescribed oral dose of 1,350 mg of GC twice daily and the CSE group, which got 10 mg of CSE orally twice daily. Pain attenuation was seen in the CSE group. Based on the findings, 10 mg CSE, twice daily, has potential in managing knee pain, stiffness, and physical functions associated with OA.
