Effectiveness of combination of ultrasonography-guided pulsed radiofrequency neuromodulation with steroid at the suprascapular nerve in chronic shoulder pain
Pain Practice Aug 29, 2019
Sinha P, et al. - Researchers investigated whether ultrasonography-guided pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) of the suprascapular nerve (SSN) is effective for the management of chronic shoulder pain. After undergoing diagnostic ultrasonography-guided SSN block, 27 out of 30 patients with confirmed positive results (> 50% pain relief) underwent PRF of the SSN, this was followed by application of dexamethasone. The patients displayed a significant decrease in the VAS score immediately after injection and had sustained pain reduction for up to 24 weeks. Further, there was a significant increase in active range of motion in all directions after the procedure. Findings support the safety and efficacy of PRF of the SSN under ultrasonography guidance as a treatment modality for the management of chronic shoulder pain. As the effect of a combination of PRF and a short-acting corticosteroid lasts up to 24 weeks, it may assist patients in undergoing relatively painless physiotherapy.
