Effectiveness of bariatric surgery vs community weight management intervention for the treatment of idiopathic intracranial hypertension: A randomized clinical trial
JAMA Neurology Jun 14, 2021
Mollan SP, Mitchell JL, Ottridge RS, et al. - In this randomized clinical trial, researchers compared the efficacy of bariatric surgery with that of a community weight management (CWM) intervention for the treatment of patients with active idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Between March 1, 2014, and May 25, 2017, women with active IIH [n = 66; mean [SD] age, 32.0 [7.8] years), 64 (97.0%)] and a BMI of 35 or higher at 5 National Health Service hospitals in the UK were analyzed. According to results, bariatric surgery outperformed a CWM intervention in terms of lowering intracranial pressure. The sustained improvement over the course of 2 years demonstrates the effectiveness of this intervention in terms of disease remission.
