Effectiveness of antibacterial prophylaxis during induction chemotherapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Sulis ML, et al. - The objective herein, was to determine if uniform antibacterial guidelines, with the inclusion of mandatory antibacterial prophylaxis in afebrile patients during induction, decreased the incidence of microbiologically documented bacteremia in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). A reduction was achieved in the incidence of bacteremia during the induction phase through the uniform antibiotic administration until blood count recovery, including fluoroquinolone prophylaxis for afebrile patients in newly diagnosed ALL patients.
