Effectiveness of an educational program for children and their families on asthma control treatment adherence
Journal of Asthma Mar 28, 2020
Koumpagioti D, et al. - Researchers investigated how an asthma care educational program for children and adolescents with asthma could influence the adherence to asthma control treatment as well as clinical indices. Participants were people newly diagnosed with asthma, aged 4–16 years. The participants were randomly assigned to the intervention and control group. For 6 weeks, these patients were monitored. At baseline, prior to the start of inhaled corticosteroids/long-acting beta2-agonist (ICS/LABA), an educational program was implemented in the intervention group; and usual care was received by the participants in the control group. A positive link of the program with improved adherence was revealed in the multivariate analysis. A positive influence of ICS/LABA on spirometric indices, exhaled nitric oxide fraction, and asthma control test score was evident, whilst no significant improvement in the above variables was brought about by the educational program. It was inferred that establishing and increasing adherence is challenging. An asthma care educational program was found to be related to greater short-term adherence during a span of active monitoring.
