Effectiveness and safety of olive oil preparation for topical use in pressure ulcer prevention: Multicentre, controlled, randomised, and double-blinded clinical trial
International Wound Journal Sep 09, 2019
Díaz-Valenzuela A, et al. - Researchers conducted this non-inferiority, multicentre, randomised, controlled, and double-blinded clinical trial to compare the therapeutic efficacy of the topical application of an olive oil solution with that of a hyperoxygenated fatty acid compound for the prevention of pressure ulcers in at-risk nursing home residents. The study population involved 571 people from 23 nursing homes with pressure ulcer risk in the Cordoba province (southern Spain). Study participants were randomly assigned to a hyperoxygenated fatty acid group (n = 288) or olive oil solution group (n = 283). As a topical preventive treatment against pressure ulcers in at-risk residents of nursing homes, this olive oil preparation is no less effective than hyperoxygenated fatty acid and is not linked to any adverse effects. It provides a secure and efficient therapeutic choice for the prevention of pressure ulcer. Findings suggested that topical olive oil preparation can be considered as a useful and effective option in the elderly to prevent pressure ulcers.
