Effective, same-day preoperative embolization and surgical resection of carotid body tumors
Head & Neck May 30, 2019
Katagiri K, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers assessed the effectiveness of the procedure by analyzing the blood loss and duration of carotid body tumor (CBT) surgery after preoperative embolization on the same day. This study included 15 patients with 16 CBTs. Data reported that the mean operative time was 138 minutes and the mean amount of blood loss was 29.3 mL. After embolization, the tumor volume was significantly reduced and the mean reduction rate was 50%. Thirteen CBTs had more than 3 feeding arteries. Nearly all postoperative complications, primarily cranial nerve paralysis, have been resolved within months of surgery. Overall, the authors concluded that the same-day procedure, with good results, is a safer and superior alternative to traditional CBT surgery.
