Effect on longevity of one-third reduction in premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by 2030: A global analysis of the Sustainable Development Goal health target
The Lancet Global Health Nov 18, 2018
Cao B, et al. - Given that the rise in global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has led the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set a target to reduce premature mortality from NCDs by one-third by 2030 and it is important to quantitatively determine the impact on longevity of meeting this target to advocate and inform national disease control policies, researchers performed a global analysis to estimate improvements in average expected years lived between 30 and 70 years of age that would result from meeting the SDG target. As per estimates, if the major NCDs-related premature mortality in 2015–2030 is reduced by one-third, substantial effects on longevity would be realized. In order to meet this SDG target by 2030, there is an urgent need of high-level political commitments to effective and equitable national surveillance and prioritized prevention, early detection, and treatment programs tailored to the major NCD types in lower-resourced settings.
