Effect of wound protectors on surgical site infection in patients undergoing Whipple procedure
HPB Dec 18, 2020
Tee MC, Chen L, Franko J, et al. - Researchers here investigated, at a multi-institutional level, if and how the use of wound protectors affects superficial or deep surgical site infection (SSI) after elective open pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). They queried the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program pancreatectomy procedure targeted participant use file from 2016 to 2018 and identified 11,562 patients undergoing PD for evaluation. Of these patients, 27% utilized wound protectors. Despite a reduction in the risk of superficial or deep SSI in patients undergoing PD in correlation with using wound protectors, only a quarter of PD was linked with their use. Findings suggested this protective effect in both the patients with or without having preoperative biliary stenting.
