Effect of varenicline combined with medical management on alcohol use disorder with comorbid cigarette smoking: A randomized clinical trial

O’Malley SS, et al. - The authors conducted this randomized clinical trial to examine the efficacy of varenicline with medical management for patients with alcohol use disorder and comorbid smoking seeking alcohol treatment, and to assess the secondary effects on smoking abstinence. Among men, varenicline with medical management resulted in decreased heavy drinking and increased smoking abstinence in the overall sample. In men with these dual behavioral health risks, varenicline could be considered to promote improvements.
