Effect of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes on the risk of venous thromboembolism

Diabetic Medicine Nov 13, 2020

Hinton W, Nemeth B, de Lusignan S, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective cohort analysis to ascertain if type 1 diabetes and/or type 2 diabetes are independent risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). From the Royal College of General Practitioners Research and Surveillance Centre, a total of 7,086 individuals with type 1 diabetes and 95,566 with type 2 diabetes, diagnosed prior to 1st January 2009, were analyzed. There were 1,407,699 people in the non‐diabetes group. A greater risk for VTE was observed in correlation with type 1 diabetes but not in relation to type 2 diabetes. Further inquiry is required to ascertain the reason(s) for this.
