Effect of thoracic epidural ropivacaine vs bupivacaine on lower urinary tract function: A randomized clinical trial
Anesthesiology Feb 18, 2018
Girsberger SA, et al. - Thoracic epidural analgesia with bupivacaine resulted in clinically relevant postvoid residuals due to detrusor underactivity. Herein, researchers compared the risk of bladder dysfunction with ropivacaine vs bupivacaine using postvoid residuals and maximum flow rates, presuming that ropivacaine would result in lower postvoid residuals, because ropivacaine has been shown to have less effect on motor blockade. Ropivacaine vs bupivacaine for thoracic epidural analgesia resulted in significantly lower postvoid residuals reflecting less impairment of detrusor function.
