Effect of the recombinant human epidermal growth factor ointment on cutaneous surgical wounds compared to antibiotic ointment
Annals of Dermatology Nov 12, 2021
Ryu SI, Kim KE, Jeong JY, et al. - Similar short-term cosmetic results were obtained with recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) ointment vs antibiotic ointment, but rhEGF ointment conferred improved surgical outcomes in terms of the wound size. Use of rhEGF could decrease the employment of antibiotic ointments for cutaneous clean (class I) wound surgery.
Comparison of efficacy of rhEGF ointment vs conventional antibiotic ointment post-cutaneous resection was performed by analyzing 11 patients with a total of 20 pairs of resection sites.
Patients who underwent excision procedures in two or more sites took part in this study, and each wound was assigned to the rhEGF group or the antibiotic ointment group.
No significant difference in Physician Global Assessment, Patient Global Assessment, melanin and erythema index was observed between rhEGF and antibiotic ointment groups.
However, significant differences in changes in length and area of wounds was evident between the two groups.
