Effect of text messaging on risk factor management in patients with coronary heart disease: The CHAT randomized clinical trial
Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes Apr 11, 2019
Zheng X, et al. - In this multicenter, single-blinded randomized controlled trial, researchers investigated if the control of risk factors in patients with coronary heart disease in China could be improved by a culturally sensitive text messaging intervention supporting secondary prevention. From 37 hospitals, they recruited 822 patients (mean age, 56.4 [SD, 9.5] years; 14.1% women) with coronary heart disease and without diabetes mellitus. The control group included 411 subjects who received 2 thank you messages/month in addition to usual care. A total of 411 subjects were included in the intervention group, who received 6 text messages/week for 6 months delivered by an automated computerized system. Via these messages, educational and motivational information associated with disease-specific knowledge, risk factor control, physical activity, and medication adherence was provided. Patients with coronary heart disease who received text messages supporting secondary prevention had no greater reduction in blood pressure at 6 months. Findings revealed the feasibility of mobile phone text messaging for secondary prevention, and it was highly acceptable to patients.
