Effect of systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis on sudden sensorineural hearing loss
The Laryngoscope Dec 09, 2019
Xie S, Ning H, She Y, et al. - This retrospective study was undertaken to determine if SLE and RA were associated with the hearing recovery of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), defined as hearing loss of at least 30 dB in three sequential frequencies within 72 h. Between January 2008 and January 2019, medical records of 663 SSNHL patients were retrospectively reviewed, involving demographic, comorbid diseases, and hearing recovery. According to Siegel's criteria and Chinese Medical Association of Otolaryngology (CMAO) criteria, participants were divided into four groups (complete, partial, slight, and no recovery). To assess the impacts of onset of treatment, initial hearing threshold, audiogram pattern, diabetes mellitus, SLE, and RA on the prognosis of SSNHL according to both criteria, multinomial logistic regression was performed. Findings revealed that patients in complete recovery, partial recovery, slight recovery, and no improvement were 95, 183, 170, and 215 by Siegel's criteria, and 90, 152, 188, and 233 by CMAO criteria, respectively. Comorbid SLE or RA may have a negative impact on SSNHL's prognosis. Lower initial hearing threshold and diabetes mellitus absence are correlated with beneficial restoration of hearing.
