Effect of standard vs intensive blood pressure control on the risk of recurrent stroke
JAMA Nov 20, 2019
Kitagawa K, Yamamoto Y, Arima H, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the optimum blood pressure target in secondary stroke prevention. They conducted a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of standard vs intensive BP control among 1,263 patients with a history of stroke. They observed a reduction in stroke recurrence in correlation to the intensive blood pressure control to less than 120/80 mm Hg vs standard blood pressure control (< 140/90 mm Hg). On combining this finding with the results of prior trials of intensive blood pressure control for secondary stroke prevention in an updated meta-analysis, a significant reduction in stroke recurrence by 22% was observed in correlation to intensive blood pressure treatment.
