Effect of sperm selection method by cumulus oophorus complexes and conventional sperm preparation method on sperm quality and DNA fragmentation for assisted reproduction techonology
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Nov 22, 2019
Naknam W, Salang L, Sothornwit J, et al. - Researchers assessed the efficacy of sperm selection, using cumulus oophorus complexes (COCs) vs conventional sperm preparation methods, on sperm quality and DNA fragmentation. They collected 30 normal semen samples under the World Health Organization 2010 eligibility criteria and processed these using conventional sperm preparation methods. The division of the prepared sperm into two groups was performed. Based on their ability to penetrate a layer of COCs, they selected spermatozoa in the study group. In the control group, they kept spermatozoa in culture medium under similar conditions. They recorded significantly higher sperm motility parameters for spermatozoa that were able to passthrough the COCs than the control group. In the COCs group vs the control group, significantly higher percentage of normal spermatozoa morphology was reported (21.70% vs 18.76%). Further, the COCs group vs the control group had significantly less DNA fragmentation (18.83 vs 10.83). These findings support the efficacy of spermatozoa selected using COCs in terms of sperm quality and DNA fragmentation.
