Journal of Global Oncology Sep 11, 2019
Olarewaju SO, et al. - In this cross-sectional analysis, researchers focused on the types and extent of delay in breast cancer (BC) diagnosis at the foremost hospital in Nigeria. They also investigated the influencing factors. Via questionnaires, they inquired 275 patients with BC at University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria from August to October 2018. The respondents had a mean age of 49 (± 11.9) years. Overall 97 respondents (35.3%) showed patient delay and 84 (30.5%) showed diagnostic delay. A significant link of patient delay with age, ethnicity, and marital status was observed. Only marital status showed significant link with diagnostic delay. Overall, experts concluded that both delays in patient presentation at clinics and delays in the process of being diagnosed challenged BC management at the pioneer Nigerian teaching hospital. In order to obtain a favorable outcome of patients with BC in Nigeria, it is required to address such delays.
