Effect of sleep deprivation and exercise on reaction threshold in adults with peanut allergy: A randomized controlled study
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Sep 22, 2019
Dua S, Ruiz-Garcia M, Bond S, et al. - Among individuals with peanut allergy, selected from the United Kingdom, researchers estimated peanut threshold doses, as well as, determined the influence of sleep deprivation and exercise. Blind challenge was performed, after which, participants who were included in a crossover study were asked to undergo 3 open peanut challenges in random order: with exercise following each dose, with sleep deprivation preceding challenge, and with no intervention. In 126 participants, baseline challenges were carried out. Randomization of 100 was done, and 81 (mean age, 25 years) completed at least 1 further challenge. Among participants, a significant decline in the threshold of reactivity was induced by exercise as well as by sleep deprivation; subsequently leading to a greater risk of a reaction in these patients.
