Effect of silicone oil on peripapillary capillary density in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment

BMC Ophthalmology Jul 10, 2020

Wang E, Chen Y, Li N, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective, consecutive cohort study to assess the impact of silicone oil (SO) on peripapillary blood flow using optic coherence tomography angiography. This investigation was carried out at Ophthalmology Department, Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). From June 2018 to February 2019, patients with unilateral rhegmatogenous retinal detachment who had uncomplicated pars plana vitrectomy and SO tamponade were registered. Twenty-two patients have been analyzed. Data reported that the average duration of SO tamponade was 101.3 days (range, 90 to 119 days). Following SO removal, the authors observed a mild increase in peripapillary capillary density, mainly in the superior hemifield. The findings indicated that SO tamponade, likely through capillary compression, may have a detrimental effect on peripapillary blood flow.
