Effect of severe diarrhea on kidney transplant outcomes
Nephrology May 18, 2019
Kim JE, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers investigated how kidney transplant outcomes were influenced by diarrhea (the most common gastrointestinal complication post-kidney transplantation). Participants were 1704 kidney recipients, with 84 (4.9%) who suffered severe diarrhea that needed hospitalization. Those who developed diarrhea were compared to those who did not. Higher risks of graft failure and all-cause mortality were seen in patients with diarrhea vs patients without diarrhea. The diarrhea group also had increased risk of de novo donor-specific antibody, the risk of biopsy-proven rejection remained unaltered. Overall, poor graft and patients’ outcomes were evident in kidney recipients in relation to diarrhoea. In order to achieve improved graft survival, it is critical to make an effort to recover from concurrent acute kidney injury.
