Effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on bone mineral density: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Osteoporosis International Feb 15, 2018
Zhou C, et al. - This meta-analysis was carried out in order to assess the effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medication on bone mineral density. Experts concluded that the use of SSRIs was notably associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD) values and BMD Z-scores of the lumbar spine, but not of total hip and femoral neck. In older people, SSRI use was noted to be related to a greater bone loss. Data illustrated that SSRI use served as a risk factor of lower BMD of the lumbar spine, especially for older people.
