Effect of renal dysfunction on the risks for ischemic and bleeding events in patients with atrial fibrillation receiving percutaneous coronary intervention

The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 19, 2019

Yamamoto K, Shiomi H, Morimoto T, et al. - Researchers investigated the impact of stages of renal dysfunction on the ischemia-bleeding trade-off in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who were treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). They used a pooled database from three Japanese PCI studies. Based on renal function, they defined four groups of patients—creatinine clearance (CCr) > 60 mL/min: n = 703; 60 ≥ CCr > 30 mL/min: n = 627; CCr ≤ 30 mL/min: n = 126; and dialysis: n = 91. Overall, they noted a strong link between worsening renal function and an increasingly higher risk for bleeding events in AF patients receiving PCI, while only patients on dialysis had a significant excess risk for ischemic events.
