Effect of race on the incidence of aortic stenosis and outcomes of aortic valve replacement in the United States
Mayo Clinic Proceedings Mar 08, 2018
Alqahtani F, et al. - The upshot of the race was evaluated by experts on the incidence of aortic stenosis (AS) as well as utilization and outcomes of aortic valve replacement (AVR) in patients older than 60 years. It was discovered that African Americans (AAs) underwent AVR less compared to whites. Findings illustrated multifactorial underlying etiology of this disparity, which, was associated with a lower incidence of AS in AAs. In contrast with whites, aortic valve replacement exhibited a connection with similar risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality but higher cost and longer hospitalizations in AAs.
