Effect of primary palliative care intervention on patients with advanced cancer

JAMA Nov 05, 2021

Schenker Y, Althouse AD, Rosenzweig M, et al. - Most patients suffering from advanced cancer and lacking access to palliative care specialists may experience benefits from primary palliative care interventions with a higher dose intensity.

  • A cluster randomized clinical trial of 672 patients with metastatic solid tumors who received a primary palliative care intervention delivered by oncology nurses (CONNECT: Care Management by Oncology Nurses to Address Supportive Care Needs) or standard care.

  • Mean quality-of-life score at 3 months did not differ between the CONNECT and standard care groups (130.7 vs 134.1; adjusted mean difference, 1.20).

  • Similarly, 3-month mean symptom burden or mood symptoms did not differ between groups.

  • Overall, the CONNECT intervention failed to improve patient-reported outcomes at 3 months.
