Effect of pregabalin on radiotherapy-related neuropathic pain in patients with head and neck cancer: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Clinical Oncology Jan 11, 2019
Jiang J, et al. - In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted in four centers in China, pregabalin vs placebo was tested as a treatment option for radiotherapy-related neuropathic pain among patients with head and neck cancer. Participants were patients with a mean pain intensity score of 4 or more on an 11-point numeric rating scale. For 16 weeks, either active treatment with a flexible dose of pregabalin or placebo was administered to patients in a random manner, and focus was on pain reduction measured on the numeric rating scale (primary efficacy outcome). A total of 128 patients received treatment as randomly assigned. Findings revealed greater pain alleviation, better mood states, and higher quality of life in patients who received pregabalin for the treatment of radiotherapy-related neuropathic pain vs those treated with placebo. Also, pregabalin was well-tolerated.
