Effect of physical disability on mortality in patients of ≥ 80 years of age undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention
The American Journal of Cardiology May 19, 2018
Leistner DM, et al. - Researchers assessed the impact of activity of daily living status as assessed by the Barthel index (BI) on all-cause mortality in patients (≥80 years) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between January 2009 and December 2014. All-cause mortality at a total follow-up of 442 (interquartile range 47-1243) days was the primary endpoint. Belonging to the high BI group was found to be related to an attenuated risk of all-cause mortality. Even after multivariable adjustments, the links remained significant. Functional capacity independently predicted survival. Overall, incorporation of activities of daily living into the risk stratification of elderly patients with coronary artery disease was recommended.
