Effect of pericardial effusion on outcomes in children admitted with systemic lupus erythematosus: A multicenter retrospective cohort study from the United States
Lupus Feb 16, 2019
Dalby ST, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study that used data from the Pediatric Health Information System, authors assessed 5,679 participants aged ≤ 18 years to study the features of children admitted with pericardial effusion (PCE) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); they also assessed the relationship between PCE and outcomes. Overall, they did not identify any significant variations for age or sex between those admitted with or without PCE. They did note, however, that a significantly greater percentage of kids in the PCE group were black vs those without PCE (43% vs 31%). They also noted a 2.5 times higher in-hospital mortality in children with PCE vs those without PCE. No correlation between PCE and increased LOS was evident.
