Effect of peppermint essence on the pain and anxiety caused by intravenous catheterization in cardiac patients: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Pain Research Oct 27, 2019
Akbari F, et al. - Researchers examined how inhaling peppermint essence influences pain and anxiety caused by intravenous catheterization. They allocated 80 cardiac patients to aromatherapy and control groups who received inhaled aromatherapy with peppermint essence and distilled water, respectively. The aromatherapy and control groups had a mean severity of the pain of 2.95±0.98 and 3.42±1.33, respectively. Before the intervention, the mean score of anxiety was 3.75±1.08 and 4.70±1.43 in the aromatherapy and control groups, respectively; following intervention, these figures were 2.32±0.97 and 2.10±1.42, respectively. These findings revealed the attenuation of pain and anxiety caused by intravenous catheterization following aromatherapy. Hence they recommend peppermint essence aromatherapy before catheterization.
