Effect of penicillin allergy on prophylactic antibiotic administration in the parturient undergoing cesarean delivery
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Nov 09, 2020
Lange SM, Sharpe EE, Hertzfeldt DN, et al. - Whether there would be less chance of receiving antibiotics prior to incision for cesarean delivery in patients with a penicillin or cephalosporin allergy, was determined in this study. Electronic medical records were used to retrospectively identify all women receiving cesarean delivery at Mayo Clinic Hospital, from March 1, 2008, to February 28, 2018. Use of antibiotics within 60 minutes before surgical incision was the primary outcome. Findings revealed that there was a less likelihood of receiving preventive antibiotics within the recommended 60 minutes before surgical incision in patients with a penicillin or cephalosporin allergy. The importance of clear plans and communication was also highlighted for ensuring proper antibiotic delivery at cesarean delivery to avert surgical site infection.
