Effect of over the counter ibuprofen dosing after sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis: A prospective cohort pilot study
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Feb 16, 2020
Miller C, et al. - In this prospective cohort pilot study involving 39 patients (15 control and 24 intervention), researchers tested the safety and effectiveness of over the counter dosing of ibuprofen on pain and bleeding rates following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Participants in the study were patients undergoing ESS. Compared with acetaminophen alone, the counter dose of ibuprofen along with acetaminophen can give better control of pain after sinus surgery. Furthermore, in the ibuprofen cohort, there was no significant difference in epistaxis relative to the cohort which did not take ibuprofen. In addition, this investigation showed very few opioid pills were consumed after routine ESS, irrespective of the prescribed pain regimen. To make definitive statements about safety and efficacy, a larger trial is required.
