Effect of obesity on patterns and mechanisms of injury: Systematic review and meta analysis

Stroud T, et al. - Researchers aimed at reviewing the available literature comparing injury patterns between obese and non-obese patients. They included 21 studies comprising almost 3 million patient events. As per outcomes, obese trauma patients differed lean patients regarding injury patterns. Compared to obese patients, non-obese patients demonstrated a higher risk of blunt trauma and higher percentage of head injuries, but lower risk of abdominal, thoracic, or extremity injury. Findings did not clarify if differing injury patterns were related to body habitus, lifestyle factors, or other confounders, but likely to represent a combination of thereof.
