Effect of needle diameter on pain during oocyte retrieval—A randomized controlled trial
Fertility and Sterility Oct 22, 2020
Buisman ETIA, de Bruin JP, Braat DDM, et al. - Researchers conducted a single-center randomized controlled trial investigating pain in women undergoing oocyte retrieval with a reduced needle (20/17 gauge) vs a standard needle (16 gauge). Participants were women undergoing their first oocyte retrieval for in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Randomization was performed of a total of 47 participants for the reduced needle (RN) and 48 for the standard needle (SN). Findings revealed significantly and clinically relevant lower pain scores during oocyte retrieval in correlation with using a thinner needle. In addition, significantly less analgesia was requested by patients in the reduced needle group during oocyte retrieval than patients in the standard needle group. Significantly lower pain scores remained until 2 days after the procedure.
