Effect of multi-component school-based program on body mass index, cardiovascular and diabetes risks in a multi-ethnic study
BMC Pediatrics Nov 16, 2019
Costa-Urrutia P, Álvarez-Fariña R, Abud C, et al. - This is the first intervention study investigating the impacts of a multi-component school-based intervention program on obesity, cardiovascular and diabetes risk factors. For this investigation, they developed and applied a physical activity, health education and parent involvement (PAHEPI) program in six urban (Mestizo ethnic group) and indigenous (Seri and Yaqui ethnic groups) primary schools for 12 weeks. In total, 320 children (aged 4 to 12 years) partook in intervention program; 203 under Treatment 1 (PAHEPI program) and 117, only from Mestizo groups, under Treatment 2 (PAHEPI+ school meals). Depending on their lifestyle and their emerging epidemiological disease, the authors recommended that the same intervention might have positive but different effects in different ethnic groups. Including this type of intervention as part of the school curriculum will make it possible to adapt to the ethnic group and contribute to child welfare more effectively.
