Effect of melatonin on postoperative pain and perioperative opioid use: A meta‐analysis and trial sequential analysis
Pain Practice Feb 11, 2021
Wang Z, Li Y, Lin D, et al. - Via performing this meta‐analysis, researchers sought to determine the effect of melatonin on postoperative pain and perioperative opioid consumption. Systematically searching PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library until October 2019 for studies evaluating the effect of melatonin vs placebo on postoperative pain, they identified 15 studies with a total of 1,102 patients for inclusion in the final analysis. As evidence gained was of low quality, there was a minor degree of VAS score reduction, and inconclusive trial sequential analysis of postoperative opioid consumption, this meta‐analysis neither supported nor opposed the effect of melatonin on postoperative pain.
