Effect of magnetic resonance imaging vs conventional treat-to-target strategies on disease activity remission and radiographic progression in rheumatoid arthritis: The IMAGINE-RA randomized clinical trial

JAMA Feb 12, 2019

Moller-Bisgaard S, et al. - Authors assessed 200 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to analyze the outcomes of an MRI-guided treat-to-target strategy vs a conventional clinical treat-to-target strategy in this 2-year, randomized, multicenter trial conducted at 9 hospitals in Denmark. They observed disease activity score in 28 joints–C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP) scores of < 3.2 with no swelling in joints. They noted that serious adverse events occurred in 17% of patients in the MRI-guided treat-to-target group and in 6% of patients in the conventional treat-to-target group. Overall, the use of MRI for treatment guidance in patients with RA neither improved disease activity remission rate nor reduced radiographic progression.
