Effect of local anesthetic vs botulinum toxin-A injections for myofascial pain disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Journal of Pain Mar 14, 2019
Ahmed S, et al. - Via this systematic review, researchers compared the effectiveness of local anesthetics and botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) on pain intensity in patients with myofascial pain. They included 33 studies. Outcomes of qualitative analysis suggest inconsistent effectiveness of local anesthetics and BTX-A at mitigating pain across all follow-up periods. Local anesthetic injections were suggested to have higher efficacy than BTX-A at mitigating pain intensity as per the meta-analyses. Higher benefits were reported with multiple injection sessions of local anesthetics than a single session. They recommend performing additional studies to determine sources of heterogeneity mediating the observed differences in effectiveness of local anesthetic and BTX-A injections among the studies.
