Effect of laser moxibustion for knee osteoarthritis: A multisite, double-blind randomized controlled trial
The Journal of Rheumatology Jun 05, 2021
Zhao L, Cheng K, Wu F, et al. - By conducting a double-blind randomized clinical trial (4-week treatment, 20-week follow-up), researchers investigated how laser moxibustion could impact pain and function in patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis (OA). They randomized 392 symptomatic knee OA patients with moderate to severe clinically significant knee pain to receive laser treatment or sham laser control group (1:1). Patients received 12 sessions of laser moxibustion or sham laser treatments on the acupuncture points at the affected knee(s) 3 times a week for 4 weeks. From baseline to Week 4, alteration in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index pain score was assessed as the primary outcome measure. Findings demonstrated that a 4-week treatment with laser moxibustion provided statistically and clinically significant pain reduction as well as function improvement in knee OA patients.
