Effect of intravenous acetaminophen vs placebo combined with propofol or dexmedetomidine on postoperative delirium among older patients following cardiac surgery: The DEXACET randomized clinical trial
JAMA Feb 24, 2019
Subramaniam B, et al. - In this randomized clinical trial that included 120 patients undergoing cardiac surgery, researchers investigated the influence of postoperative use of scheduled intravenous acetaminophen (paracetamol), combined with intravenous propofol or dexmedetomidine, on the risk of postoperative delirium. Compared with placebo, scheduled intravenous acetaminophen administered postoperatively for 48 hours, combined with intravenous propofol or dexmedetomidine as a sedative, led to a significant reduction in in-hospital delirium. The authors, therefore, recommended implementing this strategy to reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium in this patient population.
