Effect of injury location and severity on opioid use after trauma
The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Jun 28, 2021
Baker RC, Brown CS, Montgomery JR, et al. - Researchers aimed at characterizing the correlation between injury location and severity and risk of persistent opioid use. Using the Optum Clinformatics Database, they included a total of 26,437 opioid-naive patients who were admitted for trauma, in the analysis. Among these patients, 2,277 patients (8.6%) met the criteria for new persistent opioid use (NPOU). Overall findings suggest common occurrence of new persistent opioid use among patients suffering from trauma. In addition, a highest risk was recorded for patients suffering from extremity and abdominal injuries. Maximum individual region injury severity was identified as predictive of development of new persistent use, whereas total injury severity does not.
