Effect of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials
Rheumatology International Jun 15, 2018
Simental-Mendía M, et al. - Experts conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials to gauge the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate on knee osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms. Findings did not suggest a significant positive effect of the glucosamine, chondroitin or their combination on the total Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) index and its subscores. Pain in knee OA was reduced by oral supplementation with glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate. Nonetheless, authors did not note any additional impact using both therapeutic agents in combination for the management of symptomatic knee OA.
