Effect of general anesthesia and intubation on parathyroid levels in normal patients and those with hyperparathyroidism
Head & Neck Nov 24, 2017
Cinamon U, et al. - The intent of the authors was to re-analyze the observation that induction of general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation could precipitate parathyroid hormone (PTH) elevation in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). They also examined its impact on healthy patients. An immediate, steep, and significant PTH elevation was reported due to the general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation, in patients with primary HPT. However, only a minor change was noted in healthy adults. The variation could be attributed to an impaired adrenergic response in patients with primary HPT.
