Effect of frailty on postoperative readmissions and cost of care for ovarian cancer
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 05, 2020
Sia DY, Wen T, Cham S, et al. - Researchers aimed at ascertaining how frailty affects unplanned readmission, morbidity, and mortality among patients undergoing surgery for ovarian cancer. Using the Nationwide Readmissions Database, they identified 76,441 inpatient laparotomies from 2010 to 2014 with a 6.1% frailty rate. Observations revealed correlation of frailty with intensive level of care, non-home discharge, and inpatient mortality for ovarian cancer. Increased 90-day readmissions and mortality were observed in correlation with frailty but there appeared no effect of frailty on 30-day readmissions. Further, frailty correlated with raised costs and lengths of stay during their index surgery.
