Effect of fragmentation of cancer care on treatment use and survival in hepatocellular carcinoma
Cancer Aug 01, 2019
Hester CA, Karbhari N, Rich NE, et al. - Using the Texas Cancer Registry, researchers analyzed patients newly diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to characterize factors, both patient- and hospital-level, related to fragmented cancer care (FC), time to treatment (TTT), and overall survival (OS) in these patients. This study included 4,329 HCC patients, of those, FC and nonfragmented cancer care (NFC) were received by 1,185 (27.4%) and 3,144 (72.6%), respectively. Larger tumors were found in FC patients vs NFC patients. Also, a higher proportion had a regional/metastatic stage in the former group. The chance of undergoing curative therapy was less in FC patients when they were diagnosed at an early stage. Worse OS and increased TTT were observed, following covariate adjustment, among newly diagnosed patients with HCC receiving FC.
