Effect of forced-air warming by an underbody blanket on end-of-surgery hypothermia: A propensity score-matched analysis of 5063 patients
BMC Anesthesiology Apr 16, 2019
Sumida H, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of 5063 surgical patients, researchers investigated how body temperature in anesthetized patients was influenced by forced-air warming by an underbody blanket. They used propensity score matching, after which, they compared patients who used underbody blankets (Under group) to those who used other types of warming blankets (Control group) with regard to change in body temperature from before to after surgery. Based on the findings, they concluded that the incidence of intraoperative hypothermia could be attenuated with the help of the underbody blanket. Furthermore, the underbody blanket vs other types of warming blankets could be more efficient in warming anesthetized patients.
