Effect of flexible family visitation on delirium among patients in the intensive care unit: The ICU visits randomized clinical trial
JAMA Jul 22, 2019
Rosa RG, et al. - Through a cluster-crossover randomized clinical trial that with 1,685 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), researchers ascertained if a flexible family visitation policy in the ICU decreased delirium incidence. Out of the total, there were 1,295 family members and 826 clinicians. With flexible visitation, the mean daily length of visits was significantly greater. During ICU stay, the incidence of delirium did not differ significantly between flexible and restricted visitation. Including ICU-acquired infections and staff burnout, in six out of nine prespecified secondary outcomes did not vary significantly between flexible and restricted visitation. Median anxiety and depression scores were notably better with flexible visitation for family members. A flexible family visitation policy in comparison with standard restricted visiting hours did not significantly decrease the incidence of delirium amongst cases in the ICU.
