Effect of extra virgin olive oil consumption on glycemic control: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Feb 26, 2021
Dehghani F, Morvaridzadeh M, Pizarro AB, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the impact of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) intake on glycemic parameters. They found 13 related trials comprising a total of 633 individuals. In pooled analysis EVOO intake had no impact on fasting blood glucose, insulin and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance. However, a declining trend was noted in these effects. The subgroup analysis based on age, health status, dose and duration of intake of EVOO also did not significantly change the results. While EVOO seems to have promising hypoglycemic effects, no substantial evidence has been found that consumption of EVOO affects glucose homeostasis. In addition, to evaluate the effectiveness of the EVOO on glycemic parameters, well-designed RCTs with longer durations are still required.
