Effect of exercise on risk factors of diabetic foot ulcers: A systematic review and meta-analysis
American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Jan 24, 2019
Liao F, et al. - In people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, researchers studied the impact of different exercise types on risk factors of diabetic foot ulcers, including glycated hemoglobin, peripheral arterial disease, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. From beginning to January 2018, they searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and CINAHL for relevant studies. In total, 20 randomized controlled trials involving 1,357 individuals were included in this meta-analysis. According to findings, exercise has a major effect on the reduction of glycated hemoglobin, and combined exercise is more efficient than aerobic or resistant exercise. In addition, exercise improves the ankle-brachial index. However, there is still insufficient evidence of the association between exercise and peripheral neuropathy and the risks of diabetic foot ulcers in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
