Effect of equipotent doses of propofol vs sevoflurane anesthesia on regulatory T cells after breast cancer surgery

Anesthesiology Oct 21, 2018

Oh CS, et al. - Experts sought to assess how propofol- vs sevoflurane-based anesthesia during breast cancer surgery regulate cluster of differentiation 39 and 73 expression on regulatory T cells. For this study, 201 women having breast cancer surgery were randomized to propofol or sevoflurane anesthesia. During breast cancer surgery, changes in immune cells were similar with both propofol and sevoflurane. They noted the minimal effect of anesthetics had on perioperative immune activity during cancer surgery. Type 1, type 17 helper T cells, natural killer cells, cytotoxic T cells, cytokines, or the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio did not demonstrate any intergroup differences.
